Dangerous energy drinks?

The recent reviews have shown more cons than prons of consuption of these beverages. Does consuming energy drinks have any beneficial effect or is it just detrimental?

Drinking lots of energy drinks has been increased recently: energy drinks are widespread among adults and adolescents. Teens want to “test the limit of their body” and they are consuming too many energy drinks at one time to enhance their physical and mental performance. Energy drinks are also well-marketed products under the claim that these drinks are healthy and good alternatives of bad products spread over the market.

How much is reasonable dose of energy drink to drink per day?

It should be written on the label of the specific energy drink. Basically it depends on the caffeine dose in one can – should not be higher than 200 mg in one can. Because the energy drinks contain of stimulants such as glucose, taurine, vitamins, minerals, and some herbal extracts (as guarana), they should be consume reasonably. Some studies demonstrate that even one can of energy drink contains approximately 25–40 g of glucose which – drinking regularly – might lead to hyperglycemia. Hyperglycemia is considered one of the important risk factor for acute myocardial infarction and other cardiovascular diseases.

I am coffee-lover, but sometimes I need an extra shot of energy drink to boost my work performance. Will that cause some side effects?

Caffeine is the major constituent in most energy drinks. Coffee also contains caffeine, which effects increased heart rate and nervousness. Caffeine can become addicting and it’s high consumption might lead to irritability, insomnia, tremor and seizures, hypertension, cardiac arrhythmias, and palpitations. There are some studies which shown that acute caffeine intake decreases insulin sensitivity. Of course the tolerance to caffeine varies in individuals, but the safe dose of caffeine per day should not be over 400 mg per day.
